Here is a letter from me that the
TLS published last week in response to Searle's earlier letter:
"Sir,-John Searle (Letters,
February 1) explains that his aim in philosophy is not to defend common sense,
but to get at the truth. I am sorry if
he read my review (January 18) as suggesting the contrary. What I actually said was not that he
consciously aims to side with common sense, but that this is his natural
inclination.
